I would like to apply from overseas. When is the application deadline?
The application period for applicants currently without visa to Japan is from October 1 to December 25 (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays). You must pass the admissions screening and submit BIL your application within this period.

I currently hold a dependent visa. Can I enroll at BIL?
If your visa period of stay is longer than the enrollment period at BIL and you are eligible for the admission, you can apply for BIL. Please inquire us about the application materials to be submitted. The regulation is the same for those who has a permanent resident, spouse or child of Japanese national, spouse or child of permanent resident or long-term resident.

Will I not be able to enroll at BIL if I do not have a Japanese guarantor?
In principle, applicant currently without a visa to Japan needs a Japanese guarantor in order to apply for BIL. However, applicants from the countries where our overseas offices are located can use the school guarantee system and then a Japanese guarantor will not be necessary. If you are from a country without an overseas office or if you already have a status of residence in Japan and do not have a Japanese guarantor, please contact us for more details.

I’m Japanese. Can I enroll to this course?
This course is mainly for international students. We don’t ask for your nationality. However, as the course curriculum is designed for people whose mother tongue is not Japanese, you can’t enroll to this course if your mother tongue is Japanese.

Course


Is it possible to study in Business Japanese Interpreting Course only for a year?
Technically Business Japanese Interpreting Course is a 2-year course but it is up to you if you decide to take the course only for a year. If you manage to get a job during the first year, decide to go back to your country and start your own business, or have your own circumstances, you can stop taking the course. However, you will not receive the diploma if you do not finish the second year of the course. The real purpose of Business Japanese Interpreting Course is not just to get a job but to help you acquire knowledge and skill set needed for a job. You will need 2 years to successfully learn everything.

Opportunities after Graduation


I would like to find a job in Japan after graduating from Business Japanese Interpreting Course. Is it more advantageous to have a university degree from my country?
Holding a university degree (4-year program) will give you more opportunities in finding jobs in Japan. However, there is an option to go on to a university in Japan if you have not graduated from a university in your country. Also, after finishing Business Japanese Interpreting Course, you will receive a diploma. Holding a diploma will allow you to apply for jobs in Japan. Many graduates are able to get jobs with the diploma from the course.

What kind of jobs do graduates of Business Japanese Interpreting Course have?
Our graduates work in many fields which allow them to utilize their language skills.
One of the things that Japanese companies (within Japan and overseas) expect from international students is the ability to translate and interpret. Business Japanese Interpreting Course provides many practical sessions which will help you get used to real work environments such as tour guide interpreting session and simultaneous interpreting session.

Student House


When do I find out which student house room I am assigned to? When can I start living there?
Room assignments are made about a month before the entrance into BIL. Check-in into the student house is from April 1st.

Can I continue living in the student house after graduation?
You can live in the student house only while you are enrolled at BIL. Please understand that student houses only are for the new students who just arrived from abroad.

About Scholarships


Are there any scholarships for privately financed international students?
We don't offer any original scholarships. However, we can introduce you to the following scholarships, which have requirements such as grades and attendance rates.

◆Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students by Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)
BIL will select students with good attendance and academic results from the scholarship applicants and refer them to JASSO. Current students can apply.
Allowance: ¥48, 000 per month
Period Granted: 1 year (From April to March of the following year)
Qualifications: Students with “Student ” status of residence; students with good academic results; students have passed N2 level or above in the Japanese language test such as JLPT;
privately-financed students only, etc.

◆Kyoritsu Foundation Scholarship (Kyoritsu International Foundation)
BIL will select one Business Japanese Interpreting course 1st year student with good attendance and academic results from the scholarship applicants, then refer the student to the foundation. After the selection by BIL, Kyoritsu foundation will do screening and select a scholarship recipient. If the student is selected as a recipient, the student can receive the scholarship in his/her 2nd year at BIL.
Allowance: ¥ 100 , 000 or ¥ 60 , 000 per month (Scholarship type will be decided by the foundation. One student from either of the scholarship types)
Period Granted: One year (April to next March)
Conditions: Privately-financed international students from Asian countries*1 who can participate in seminars held by the foundation and submit assignments (twice a year), etc.
*1“ Asian countries” here refers to the following countries: Republic of Korea, People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, India, SriLanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, East Timor, Brunei, or the Maldives.

Availability of scholarships is made known around the following time each year:
・Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students by Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) …..April
・Kyoritsu Foundation Scholarship (Kyoritsu International Foundation)…..In early November in the year before start receiving the scholarship

Others


Can I work part-time after school?
If you are currently holding a student visa and wish to do a part-time job, you must apply for a "Permit to Engage in Activity Other than that Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted" at the Immigration Bureau to get a permission to do a part-time job. Also, you must follow the rules given below.
  1. The part-time job must not exceed 28 hours a week. (During long-term breaks, within 8 hours/day)
  2. Jobs prohibited by BIL are not allowed.
  3. During the first 3 months from the day of enrollment, students newly entered to Japan are not allowed to do a part-time job. We would like you to get use to life in Japan first.

I have heard that BIL has very strict requirements for the graduation. Is this true?
Yes. One of the requirements for the graduation from Business Japanese Interpreting Course is the attendance record of above 80%. It may seem strict but every year most of the students are able to graduate. Attendance affects the visa extension or change of residence status process. Please make every effort to keep your attendance above 90%.
